The Educated Wrestler

By Walter Taylor

You are tough.  We know you are tough and you know you are tough.  And you can go through life being real tough……OR you can go through life being real tough…and REAL SMART!  You can be an interesting person who knows interesting things about the world we live in.  You are about to enter the world of the Educated Wrestler.  Who/what is the Educated Wrestler? You ARE the educated wrestler!  This part of the Capilano Wrestling Club web-site is named in honour of you!    Just what does the educated wrestler know?  Well, for starters the physical wrestler knows about the half nelson…..the educated wrestler knows about Admiral Nelson.  The physical wrestler knows about losing with dignity…..the educated wrestler knows about the Spartan’s loss at Thermopylae.  The physical wrestler knows about wrestling with opponents…..the educated wrestler knows about wrestling with ideas.   The physical wrestler knows about the art of wrestling…..the educated wrestler knows about ART!  Thus the Balmoral wrestling room Art Gallery, which we sometimes call the “Wall of Wisdom”.

Paul Serusier - Breton Wrestlers

The Wall of Wisdom is roughly organized into the ten sections described below.  Each section on the Wall of Wisdom has plaques containing text which discusses most of the images.  The links noted beside each of the headings described below will take the Educated Wrestler to a page that contains both the images and the accompanying text.

  1. The Beginnings of Art and Wrestling
  2. Interesting Art of Early Cultures
  3. Your  Body  is Your  Temple
  4. Creation of Gods and Men
  5. Gods Walking with Men
  6. Let the Heads Roll
  7. Historical Art
  8. Modern Art
  9. Portraits

Parents and students of other schools who have not yet viewed the Wall of Wisdom are invited and encouraged to do so, but please take your shoes off before walking on the wrestling mats.

Note to Parents - Sport is a vehicle through which coaches can reach out to students and teach lessons that can last a lifetime.  The obvious lessons are learning to train, to struggle, to cooperate, to play fairly, to lose with dignity and to win with grace.   But young minds will open under positive emotional stress and coaches have the luxury of being able to drop snippets of information into open, receptive minds.  A bit of trivia that might be lost in a formal classroom setting might be absorbed with glee when a student is on the ground and heaving to catch his breath!  Thus the location of the Wall of Wisdom in a smelly wrestling room!
